Lundbeck Named a 2020 Chicago Tribune Top Workplace

Amidst the challenges of 2020, Lundbeck’s commitment to doing what’s right for its colleagues and patient communities earns recognition as top local employer.

Deerfield, Ill., October 30, 2020 – Lundbeck US, an affiliate of the global biopharmaceutical company H. Lundbeck A/S with U.S. headquarters in suburban Chicago, announced today it has been named a 2020 Top Workplace by the Chicago Tribune. This marks the third straight year that Lundbeck received the honor. The Top Workplace list is based solely on employee feedback and ranks organizations based on performance in various aspects of workplace culture, including alignment and connection.

“This year has presented many changes related to where and how we work, but our colleagues have been steadfast in their commitment to meeting the needs of our patient communities and supporting one another,” says Peter Anastasiou, executive vice president and head of Lundbeck North America. “Our workplace culture is as strong as ever, and that is a testament to the resilience of our colleagues and the passion they bring to their work every day. More than any other year, I am proud to receive this recognition, and I am grateful to our Lundbeck team for sustaining our unique, collaborative and purpose-driven culture.”

Maintaining a responsive work culture and flexible work environment

Throughout 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic, Lundbeck has actively sought employee input on how the company can most effectively support colleagues and their families during this dynamic time. Appreciating the challenges many colleagues are facing, related to e-learning and child- or elder-care responsibilities, plus health concerns during a pandemic, the company has offered its Deerfield-based employees ongoing workplace flexibility. Every employee has the choice to work remotely or from the office, always in accordance with local public health guidance, which includes practicing social distancing and wearing a face mask. Leadership has encouraged all employees to be flexible and open to new ideas and ways of working while still pursing and achieving business goals.

In addition, the company extended two additional weeks of fully paid Emergency Paid Sick Leave to all U.S. employees who may be impacted by COVID-19. This emergency leave is on top of the existing comprehensive health and welfare benefits, work-life programs and flexible work schedules that are part of the standard benefits package.

Sustaining patient-centricity during unusual times

As the only global biopharmaceutical company solely focused on the brain, Lundbeck is deeply committed to the communities it serves, and patient centricity is at the core of the corporate culture. Across the organization and at every level, Lundbeck colleagues strive to make a positive difference in the lives of people impacted by brain diseases. Lundbeck’s 200+ Chicago-based colleagues regularly participate in patient advocacy and disease awareness events across the Chicagoland area.

This year, with most events cancelled or moved online, Lundbeck has offered colleagues a variety of opportunities to engage with patient communities, including hosting patient advocates at company-wide webinars and organizing virtual walks, which allowed colleagues to join a team and walk in their own neighborhoods to raise awareness and demonstrate commitment to Lundbeck’s patient communities.

Colleagues were also able to take their paid volunteer day, available to all U.S. employees, to support an organization of their own choice.

Supporting emotional health

With a long history in brain health, Lundbeck is deeply committed to preserving the mental health and emotional well-being of its own employees during this challenging time. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Lundbeck has extended a variety of well-being resources and support to colleagues, including webinars featuring leading experts offering self-care strategies, along with advice for building resilience, managing mental health and remote working. The company also initiated Starfish Days, two additional paid company holidays, as a gesture to address the challenge of balancing work and life during this time. On Starfish Days, the entire U.S. organization has the day off, which means no meetings or collaborative work; colleagues can take advantage of this time to just relax and recharge.

Lundbeck also offers a variety of workplace programs geared toward reducing the stigma of mental illness and supporting employees’ mental health. For example, Lundbeck offers employees full access to the resources of Right Direction, an initiative it has supported nationwide that helps employers take on depression in the workplace.
